Nov 21 Dem Cafe.png

The Indivisible Sequim Wellness & Resiliency Committee is launching an engaging series of luncheon discussions. Our goal is to provide community members with a safe environment that is nurturing and stimulating. Here participants can relax, re-boot, and gather the strength to continue our opposition.

What's Up with this Supreme Court?

Many of us feel we are losing democracy in real time. What role is the Supreme Court playing in this slow dance? Are the justices an active branch of government and guardians of the constitution, or are they taking sides with the Trump administration? Or are they simply sitting on the sidelines stymied by their own internal conflicts? In this second of our Democracy Cafe series, we're excited to present husband and wife team Nils Pederson and Joyce Francis as our expert facilitators. Their perspective from years of legal experience will help us unpack these perplexing issues and bring insight to current conflicts of interest.

Our first Democracy Cafe at the Paradise Cafe was hugely successful and brought over forty people together for a lively lunchtime discussion. It was bonding, inspiring and thought provoking. We expect nothing less from this event.

At the St. Luke’s we will not have the lunch option but will have a spread of cookies and water for everyone. Therefore, we encourage you to bring the 'Cafe' part of this event with a latte, tea, chai from your favorite Sequim coffee shop !

Due to St. Luke’s gathering capacity, we are limiting the group size to 50. Please register your participation with intent to show-up!

BIOS:

Nils Pedersen and Joyce Francis have offered historical and case-based courses on the Supreme Court for over a decade through Jefferson County Library, Peninsula and Olympia Colleges, and their Unitarian Fellowships.

Nils is a retired patent attorney and member of the Washington State Bar. His current legal interests are estate law and end-of-life planning.

Joyce is a retired international professor and long-time facilitator of the Great Decisions Program on U.S. foreign policy.

You are invited to come ready to listen, share, and think deeply. Democracy might be under pressure, but community conversations like these remind us:  we're not powerless when we come together.
