About the event
Originally written as a novel in 1935 by Sinclair Lewis, this cautionary tale was adapted into a play in 1936. The story follows an American politician who quickly rises to power by creating fear, promising drastic economic and social reforms, and touting a return to patriotism and ‘traditional’ values. He becomes the country’s first outright dictator, an illusion to the very real story of Hitler’s Nazi Germany.
An astute journalist/newspaper editor foresees the new president’s policies for what they are and becomes his most ardent critic. The plot centers on the journalist’s opposition to the new regime and his subsequent struggle against it as part of a liberal rebellion.
Indivisible Sequim is excited to have the opportunity to present a radio-style theatrical production of this poignant story that foreshadows the fragility of democracy as we now, in real time, are experiencing how fascism could take hold in America.
